Alfred Blatter, alto horn, has played horn
with the University of Illinois Concert Band, the Mark Foutch Brass
Band, The United States Army Band, the Chester County Concert Band,
The Champaign-Urbana Symphony, the Richmond Symphony, the Roanoke
Symphony and The Orchestra Society of Philadelphia under such
diverse conductors as Mark Hindsley, Harry Begian, William Revelli,
Sam Laboda, Frede Grofe, Ray Dvorak, Arthur Fiedler, Luis Biava and
Max Rudolph. Holding a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in composition
and theory from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, he has
been on the faculties of Marshall University, the University of
Illinois, and Drexel University where he established and headed the
Department of Performing Arts. Though retired, he currently teaches
musical acoustics and orchestration at The Curtis Institute of
Music. His compositions are published by M.M. Cole, Media Press and
BIM. His bookInstrumentation and
Orchestra
(now in its 2nd ed.) has been the standard textbook
since
1980.
